Build a production-ready tech pack with drawings, materials, construction, measurements, artwork, comments, and revision control.

A clothing tech pack is the controlled instruction set used to develop, quote, sample, and manufacture a style. It should let a pattern maker, sourcing team, sample room, and quality reviewer identify the same product and revision without reconstructing decisions from messages. A useful pack is precise where the design is fixed, explicit where options remain open, and updated whenever an approval changes the product.

Define the tech-pack scope

Create one style record with a unique style number, product name, season or program, owner, date, and revision. State the intended fit, size range, base size, use, and important product constraints. Include a short design intent so technical teams understand which features must be protected when proposing solutions.

Do not combine several products into one ambiguous file. Colorways can share a construction pack when they are technically identical, but different silhouettes or component systems need clear separation. If part of the design is not decided, label it "development option" with the decision owner and deadline rather than leaving a blank.

Create accurate technical drawings

Provide flat drawings of the front and back, plus side, interior, or detail views where needed. Show seams, panels, pockets, closures, topstitching, pleats, darts, rib, binding, artwork, and labels. Draw hidden construction with callouts or separate details instead of crowding the main view.

Number callouts and connect them to written specifications. A drawing communicates location and relationship; text defines materials, dimensions, operations, and acceptance. Inspiration photographs can accompany the flats, but they should be annotated to explain exactly which feature is being referenced.

Build the bill of materials

The bill of materials, or BOM, lists every component required for one finished product. Assign each item a code and include description, composition or material, supplier and article when approved, color, size or dimension, placement, quantity per garment, finish, and approval status.

Link colorways to a color BOM so body, trim, thread, artwork, and packaging combinations are unambiguous. The capabilities overview can help identify which sourcing and finishing details belong in the list.

Specify construction and workmanship

Describe seam type, stitch type, stitch appearance, seam allowance, topstitch distance, reinforcement, edge finish, pressing, and process order where it affects the result. Use diagrams for complex areas. Avoid instructions such as "high-quality stitching"; define what acceptable execution looks like.

Create a workmanship section for issues that apply across the style: symmetry, matching, loose threads, skipped stitches, puckering, stains, needle damage, raw edges, hardware operation, and decoration placement. Product-specific critical points should be called out separately.

If the garment is washed, dyed, distressed, coated, bonded, or otherwise finished after sewing, describe the target appearance and measurement stage. Include a retained physical standard where digital files cannot communicate hand or variation.

Add measurements, grade, and tolerances

For every point of measure, provide a code, name, diagram, method, base-size target, full-size chart or grade rule, and tolerance. State whether the garment is closed, relaxed, stretched, or measured before or after a process. Use the same codes in fit comments and inspection reports.

Control artwork, labels, and packaging

For each decoration, include editable artwork, final visual, technique, dimensions, colors, placement from fixed reference points, orientation, and expected hand or finish. Identify whether placement changes by size. Record setup or strike-off approval and the nominated substrate.

Provide label artwork and exact attachment: location, orientation, fold, stitch, seam insertion, or heat application. Include required product information only after checking the selling-market rules. Packaging instructions should show folding, size sticker, barcode or product identifier, inserts, individual pack, carton assortment, and carton marking.

Design the sample comment cycle

Issue one consolidated review per sample. Identify sample type, date received, measured results, fit observations, workmanship, material and color status, decoration status, photographs, required actions, and approval decision. Tie comments to callouts and POMs.

  1. Measure the sample against the issued revision before fitting.
  2. Separate pattern or fit corrections from workmanship mistakes.
  3. State the requested result and measurable change.
  4. Update the tech pack, not only the comment sheet.
  5. Issue a new revision and archive the superseded file.

Follow the stages in the ordering process so development, size-set, and pre-production approvals have distinct purposes.

Manage revisions as one source of truth

Put a revision history near the front with date, editor, and summary of changes. Use a consistent file name and prevent uncontrolled copies from circulating. Highlight changes for the recipient, but ensure the final document remains readable without comparing it with an older version.

When a material, measurement, artwork, or construction decision changes, update every affected page. Contradictions are more dangerous than missing detail because different teams may follow different instructions. Before bulk approval, conduct a pack audit against the approved sample and signed material or color standards.

Send a production-ready pack

A complete issue includes the tech pack PDF, editable artwork, linked diagrams, color standards, relevant test requirements, quantity matrix, destination, and timing. Ask the production partner to return questions and assumptions in one list. Resolve them in the controlled revision.

Use the quality framework to translate the pack into inspection points. If your concept needs to be turned into a structured development request, share the current files and identify what is approved versus open. A tech pack is finished only for a particular stage; it remains the product record as real samples replace assumptions.
