Compare fleece structures, fibers, surfaces, garment uses, construction needs, and tests before approving fabric for clothing production.
Fleece is a family of pile fabrics used for warmth, softness, and surface interest in hoodies, sweatshirts, jackets, linings, blankets, and accessories. It is not a single fiber or quality grade. A fleece can be cotton-rich, polyester-rich, blended, knitted, brushed on one side, brushed on both sides, smooth-backed, high pile, or compact. Choosing well requires a complete fabric specification and testing the finished garment.
Understand how fleece is made
Many apparel fleeces begin as knitted fabric. Loops or a surface are raised through brushing, then may be sheared to create a more even pile. A common sweatshirt fleece has a smooth outer face and a brushed inner face. Loopback or French terry leaves visible loops on the reverse instead of creating a fully brushed pile. High-pile synthetic fleeces use a different aesthetic and construction direction for outer layers or linings.
The pile traps air and changes hand, warmth, bulk, and appearance. Brushing also places stress on fibers, so yarn quality, structure, finishing, and subsequent care affect shedding and pilling. A heavier number on a specification does not automatically mean a more durable or better fabric.

Ask for composition, knit construction, target weight, usable width, pile height or finish, stretch, shrinkage, colorfastness, pilling expectation, and care recommendation. If the product direction is a hoodie or sweatshirt, review the relevant options in the product catalog before locking fabric.
Match fleece to the garment
A structured streetwear hoodie may benefit from a compact fleece with enough body to hold the silhouette. A close athletic layer needs less bulk, comfortable stretch, and efficient moisture management. A high-pile jacket requires seam and closure solutions that control the pile. A lining must be considered with the shell so the layers move and care together.
Evaluate the whole system: body fleece, rib, pocketing, hood layers, zipper, drawcord, thread, labels, and decoration. Rib should coordinate visually while providing the recovery needed at cuff and hem. A double-layer hood can become heavy in a dense fleece. Kangaroo pockets need stable openings. Zippers require enough clearance to avoid catching pile.

Specify surface and color
Words such as "soft" and "premium" are not approval standards. Retain a signed cutting that shows the accepted face, reverse, pile density, color, and hand. Photograph it for records, but use the physical piece for comparison. State whether shade variation, marl effect, or washed character is intentional.
Pile direction can change how color appears. Plan marker direction and panel orientation, particularly on visible high-pile surfaces. Check whether brushing or washing changes measurements and shade. For matching rib and other components, approve the relationship on a sewn sample under relevant lighting rather than expecting different materials to look identical.
Allow the delivered fabric to relax under the agreed conditions before cutting and confirm whether roll tension changes width or length. Inspect the usable face for bands, uneven brushing, crushed pile, contamination, and visible joins. These checks protect both marker planning and the consistency of panels within one garment.
Test fleece before production
Begin with fabric tests relevant to the product and selling market, then repeat critical observations on the garment. Measure before and after the proposed care cycle. Review shrinkage, twisting, surface pilling, pile matting, shedding, color change, rubbing transfer, seam appearance, and stretch recovery where applicable.
Wear testing reveals issues a flat test cannot. Check heat and bulk during intended use, abrasion under bags or outer layers, cuff and hem recovery, pocket shape, hood weight, and whether the interior catches on base garments. Test decoration on the actual fleece. A brushed surface can affect print definition, embroidery support, adhesive contact, and heat response.
Record acceptance criteria in the quality plan. Do not approve bulk from a hand-feel description alone, because pile and finish can vary visibly between developments or lots.
Plan construction and care
Needle, thread, seam type, feed, and pressing should suit the fabric's thickness and stretch. Bulky intersections may require grading or a different construction. Stabilize areas such as zipper openings, pockets, or shoulders when the sample shows growth, while avoiding unnecessary stiffness.
Care instructions must be based on a method that the complete garment can withstand, including artwork and trims. For products sold in the United States, manufacturers and importers should review the Federal Trade Commission's official Care Labeling Rule guidance; other markets have their own requirements. Test first, then write the instruction, never select a familiar symbol set without evidence.
Prepare a fleece sourcing brief
State the product, silhouette, season, target composition, structure, weight range, surface direction, stretch, color, finish, decoration, care, quantity, and required tests. Include reference swatches when available and explain which qualities must be matched. Identify acceptable alternatives separately.
