Use ten evidence checks to compare activewear suppliers on material control, fit, construction, testing, capacity, quality, and total cost.
A useful activewear manufacturer shortlist cannot be built from a logo wall or an unsupported "best" ranking. Activewear combines stretch materials, body-mapped fit, seam extension, opacity, decoration, and performance claims. The right supplier is the one whose documented capability matches the product, quantity, evidence standard, and sales market. Use the ten checkpoints below to compare candidates on the same basis.
1. Define the activewear scope before contacting factories
List the exact styles, intended activities, size range, quantity by color, target delivery, and required customization. Leggings, sports bras, running shells, compression tops, and fleece warm-ups do not use one production system. Separate launch essentials from later additions. A focused first enquiry produces more comparable answers than asking whether a supplier can make "all gym wear."
State which development assets exist: technical drawings, graded measurements, material references, physical samples, artwork, and packaging files. If they are incomplete, ask whether the candidate provides product development and how that work is quoted.
2-3. Verify relevant machinery and sample capability
Ask which operations are performed at the disclosed facility and which are subcontracted. Stretch products may require overlock, coverstitch, flatlock, bartack, elastic application, bonding, laser cutting, or specialized hemming depending on design. Equipment names are not enough; request recent, permission-cleared examples that use comparable fabric weight and construction.
Review the sample process separately. Confirm sample types, fees, revision rounds, material substitution rules, approval records, and whether a pre-production sample represents bulk materials and methods. A supplier that can make one attractive prototype is not automatically prepared to control a repeatable size run.

4-5. Assess material control and fit development
Compare materials with a data sheet and physical swatch. Record composition, knit structure, weight, usable width, stretch force and percentage in both directions, recovery, opacity, color, shrinkage, pilling, and care. If recycled content or a performance finish is part of the brief, request traceable evidence tied to the nominated material.
Fit should be assessed during the intended movement and across representative sizes. Ask how the factory controls relaxed and extended measurements, elastic ratios, panel alignment, cup or gusset shape, and artwork placement. Clarify who owns the final patterns and graded files and how approved revisions are recorded.
6-8. Evaluate construction, claims, and quality control
Supply a seam and stitch map rather than accepting an unspecified "sports stitch." Review seam stretch, recovery, bulk, skipped stitches, thread ends, elastic joins, and abrasion points. Wash the assembled sample because shell, mesh, elastic, thread, transfers, and labels may respond differently.
Do not publish quick-dry, moisture-management, compression, UV, antibacterial, or similar claims from sales language alone. Define a test method and acceptance threshold, and confirm whether the evidence applies to fabric or finished garment. A quality plan should name critical measurements, tolerances, shade controls, inspection stages, defect categories, sampling level where used, and remedy process. Ask to see a blank example report.
9-10. Compare capacity and commercial terms honestly
Capacity should mean a planned allocation for the proposed styles, not a large monthly number without context. Ask what material lead time, sample approval, line booking, production, inspection, and shipping milestones form the schedule. Identify subcontractors and peak-season constraints.
Normalize quotes before comparing them. Confirm currency, Incoterm, sample and development charges, material minimums, color minimums, artwork setup, labels, packaging, testing, inspection, freight, duties, payment stages, over- or under-delivery tolerance, and the effect of changes after approval. The cheapest headline number may omit important work.
Create an evidence-based shortlist
Score each candidate against the same weighted criteria: product match, sample quality, material control, fit and grading, claim evidence, communication, quality system, schedule, commercial clarity, and business verification. Record evidence links or files beside every score. Reject candidates that will not disclose the actual production arrangement or provide a written specification.
Use a movement and care pilot
Test production-representative samples during the activities named in the brief. Record wearer measurements, sample size, movement, duration, climate, underlayers, and load in pockets. Review opacity during stretch, waistband or underband movement, seam pressure, chafing, support, recovery, moisture feel, pocket security, and whether hems or openings migrate. Subjective feedback is useful when the conditions and garment version are recorded.
Run the intended care cycle more than once, then recheck measurements, torque, pilling, color, odor retention where relevant, elastic recovery, bonded edges, transfers, and reflective details. A fabric report alone cannot predict how thread, seams, elastic, artwork, and panels behave together.
For the first production, retain roll and dye-lot references, cutting records, approved shade bands, in-line measurements, test reports, final inspection, and a sealed garment from the shipment. Compare those records with wear feedback before reordering. This evidence shows whether a good development sample became a repeatable activewear product.
